Casa Mae - Creative Residency

to kick start 2019, we were invited to participate in Casa Mae’s Share & Stay creative residency. so, we packed our bags, waved goodbye to the grey clouds of London and headed to sunny Lagos, Portugal.

as part of our residency we were asked to host two workshops, these were the first of the year AND more excitingly the first test run of a new direction for aeand studio.

at the end of 2018, our studio space was closed down, as much as this was an inconvenient turn of events it forced us to slow down, and to re-think our process. we have always been committed to using natural materials for all of our products - irish linen, recycled cotton rag paper etc. along with the closure of our printing studio, came the loss of our ink supplier. so, after contemplating for months before hand, this was the perfect push to encourage us to explore creating our own all natural inks. since, we have been learning about the extraction of natural dyes, and the endless landscape of colour that can be drawn from natural substances and food waste, making these dyes into printable inks for textiles and paper.

our workshops at Casa Mae were the first using 3 of of our own 100% natural inks, extracted from avocado stones, eucalyptus leaves and old coffee grounds. making beautiful earthy tones of pink, orange & brown.

moving forward we plan to partner with local restaurants and cafes to work with them in reducing food waste and collecting what we can to be used for our natural inks. we are super excited about this new direction for aeand studio, and hope that this will add to our holisitic approach of creating small batch products, made by hand from natural and responsible materials.
